On December 2, 2025, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts published “Judge John D. Bates Receives 2025 Devitt Award.” The notice states Bates is the 2025 recipient of the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award, presented October 16 in a ceremony at the Supreme Court presided over by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., and attended by five Associate Justices.

The same notice recites his 2001 appointment, FISC service and presiding-judge term, AOUSC directorship, and rules-committee chairs. It is an official judiciary press item. It is not a finding in NAACP v. Trump, the DOGE docket, or the 2026 records cases.
